KPJ Damansara Specialist Hospital hosted an Autism Awareness Day on 10 May, filled with colourful crafts, sensory play zones, interactive booths, and a friendly clown. Families, educators, and healthcare professionals gathered to promote awareness and early support, while children enjoyed creative and sensory activities.
The event was led by Dr. Charlotte Jane Joseph; Consultant Developmental Paediatrician reminds us why early support matters. “Every child is unique, and some just experience the world differently,” she said. “Sometimes they need quieter spaces or a different way of learning—but with the right tools and support, they can thrive. It’s not about labels—it’s about helping them be the best version of themselves.”

KPJ Damansara Specialist Hospital also partnered with the National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM) to raise awareness and provide support for early childhood development.
In collaboration with Angsana Health, KPJ Damansara’s Child Development Centre uses the Autism Virtual Early Screening Tool (AVEST)—a simple and easy-to-use online tool that helps parents spot early signs of autism from home, making it easier to get the right support at the right time.
Nurul Nabilah, Occupational Therapist at KPJ Damansara Specialist Hospital, shared what keeps her motivated: “Helping kids learn everyday skills—like brushing their teeth, making friends, or getting through school without meltdowns—is what I love most. Events like this keep us connected to families and remind us how important community is.” She added, “It’s great to see more parents asking questions and wanting to understand how to support their kids better. That’s the first big step.”

Rusmawati bt Abdullah, who leads NASOM’s Early Intervention Program, said the event helped break down barriers. “Some visitors came up and told us they weren’t sure what signs to look out for in their children or relatives. That opened the door for us to guide them to the right resources and explain what NASOM offers,” she said. “We’re really glad to see KPJ Damansara Specialist Hospital stepping up to support families and raise awareness in such a practical and welcoming way.”
