Obstetrics and Gynaecology also known as O&G or Obs & Gynae are the two surgical specialties dealing with the disease and conditions related to female reproductive organs and conditions associated with pregnancy.

What is Obstetrics?
Obstetrics is the field of study concentrated on pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. As a medical specialty, obstetrics is combined with gynecology under the discipline known as obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN), which is a surgical field.

What is Gynaecology?
Gynaecology is the medical practice dealing with the health of the female reproductive system. Almost all modern gynaecologists are also obstetricians. In many areas, the specialities of gynaecology and obstetrics encompasses the two subspecialties of obstetrics covering pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period and gynecology covering the health of the female reproductive system – vagina, uterus, ovaries, and breasts.

Laparoscopy is a type of surgical procedure that allows a surgeon to access the inside of the abdomen (tummy) and pelvis without having to make large incisions into the skin. This procedure is also known as keyhole surgery or minimally invasive surgery as such the surgeon uses an instrument called a laparoscope. This is a small tube that has a light source and a camera, which relays images of the inside of the abdomen or pelvis to a television monitor.

The advantages of this technique over traditional open surgery include:

• faster return to normal activities
• less pain and bleeding after the operation

• less internal scarring/adhesions
