A successful joint replacement is only part of the outcome. At KPJ Penang Specialist Hospital, the new Orthopaedic & Rheumatology Centre of Excellence combines surgical precision with coordinated rehabilitation to help patients regain mobility and independence.
For Dr Teh Hak Lian, Consultant Orthopaedic, Trauma & Joint Replacement Surgeon (Robotic Surgery) at KPJ Penang Specialist Hospital, the significance of the new Centre lies in what it can offer patients throughout their treatment and recovery.
“It allows us to provide specialised expertise, advanced technology and patient-centred care within one coordinated centre,” he says.
Patients have access to a multidisciplinary team, robotic-assisted technology and comprehensive rehabilitation services, with treatment tailored to their individual needs. The Centre aims to make specialised orthopaedic care more accessible to patients in Penang and across the Northern Region.
“Most importantly, the Centre reflects KPJ’s commitment to improving clinical outcomes and adopting innovation responsibly as we strengthen the delivery of advanced orthopaedic care,” says Dr Teh.
Care Beyond the Operating Theatre
An orthopaedic Centre of Excellence is more than a facility for consultations and surgery. Its role extends across the patient's treatment, from initial assessment and diagnosis to surgery, rehabilitation and follow-up care.
Specialists, nurses and rehabilitation professionals work as a team, with each discipline contributing to the patient's treatment plan. This helps maintain continuity of care and ensures that clinical decisions take account of the patient's condition, anatomy and functional goals.

For patients, the benefits extend beyond the procedure itself. The focus is on safe treatment, a well-supported recovery and the ability to return to everyday activities with greater confidence.
“Ultimately, our focus is on delivering safe, precise and consistent care while helping patients regain mobility, independence and quality of life,” he says
Experience Behind the Expertise
Dr Teh’s works in arthroplasty and joint reconstruction is supported by Ministry of Health fellowship training and further training in the United Kingdom and Germany, including robotic arthroplasty.
His experience has reinforced the importance of matching surgical techniques and technology to each patient's needs. Successful joint replacement requires more than technical precision. It also depends on careful assessment, appropriate treatment decisions and rehabilitation after surgery.
The Centre provides an opportunity to expand access to personalised joint care and robotic-assisted procedures, while placing greater attention on patient education, rehabilitation pathways and clinical outcome evaluation.
“The goal is not only to perform a successful operation, but to help each patient recover well and return confidently to the activities that matter to them,” he says.
Technology Guided by Clinical Judgement
Digital planning, artificial intelligence and robotic-assisted systems can help surgeons assess individual anatomy, plan procedures and achieve greater precision during surgery.
Yet the decision to use these tools must always be guided by clinical evidence and the needs of the patient.
“Technology should complement, not replace, clinical judgement and surgical expertise,” he says.
For the Centre, this means assessing new technology carefully and monitoring its impact on clinical outcomes. Within the KPJ Health System, such evidence is important not only for evaluating individual treatments, but also for informing clinical practice and the responsible adoption of innovation.
“We will continue evaluating clinical outcomes so that new technology is used where it genuinely supports patient safety, function and recovery, rather than being introduced simply because it is new,” he adds.
The Next Step for Orthopaedic Care
Looking ahead, Dr Teh hopes the Centre will become a recognised regional hub for orthopaedic and joint care, with a reputation for strong clinical outcomes, compassionate service and the responsible use of advanced technology.

Research, education and multidisciplinary collaboration will also have a role in its future development. Equally important is the continued assessment of treatment outcomes and the willingness to improve clinical practice based on evidence.
For Dr Teh, the measure of success remains the same, regardless of how far surgical techniques and technology advance.
“Ultimately, our success should be measured by patients moving better, living more independently and enjoying a better quality of life,” he says.
