By Air
KLIA, or Kuala Lumpur International Airport, stands as one of the largest airports in Asia, serving numerous international airlines. From KLIA, travelers can access all major international and domestic airports across Malaysia (refer to our Transport page for details). Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia offer convenient and cost-effective connecting flights, often allowing luggage to be checked through to domestic destinations nationwide. For Malaysia Airlines, check-in options are available at KL Sentral, offering added convenience for travelers.
KL Sentral serves as the central hub for both rail and air travel in Kuala Lumpur. Passengers flying with Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia can check in at KL Sentral and take the ERL, an express train directly to the airport (visit www.kliaekspres.com for more information).
The most economical way to travel between KLIA and LCCT (Low-cost Carrier Terminal) is by bus, with frequent services connecting KL Sentral to LCCT throughout the day.
Popular budget airlines like Air Asia, Firefly, Jetstar, and Tiger Airways operate daily flights from KLIA to Singapore. For the best rates, it is advisable to book flights online in advance.
Important: Budget airlines operate on a point-to-point basis, so ensure a minimum 3-hour gap between connecting flights at KLIA, Malaysia, or Changi, Singapore. Note that AirAsia flights depart from LCC Terminal at KLIA, while Firefly operates from Subang Airport (SZB). Passengers flying with other airlines should confirm the landing airport.
Travel Tips: Fares on low-cost airlines can vary, so book early or consider flying on weekdays to secure lower fares. Compare rates and book tickets conveniently online.
By Rail
The main railway hub, KL Sentral, centrally located in Kuala Lumpur, serves as a pivotal point for train services. Trains stop at KL Sentral, the primary railway station, where Malayan Railways (KTMB) operates daily intercity express services connecting various towns. The main rail line spans the length of the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, beginning from the Malaysia-Thai border at Padang Besar and passing through Alor Star, Butterworth, Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur, Seremban, and Johor Bahru before terminating in Singapore. Additionally, travelers can journey from Kuala Lumpur to the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, extending all the way to Tumpat in Kelantan. It is important to note that train travel is a slower option in Peninsular Malaysia, with limited services available.
By Road
The most efficient means to travel beyond the city and explore other regions of Peninsular Malaysia is by road. Direct roads connect Malaysia with Thailand and Singapore, facilitating seamless travel. The North-South Expressway spans the length of the peninsula, converging at Kuala Lumpur, while trunk roads branch out across the region, interconnected with KL. Daily express coaches and buses provide extensive service from Kuala Lumpur to major towns throughout Peninsular Malaysia, as well as to Singapore and Thailand. Tickets for these services can be purchased at express bus terminals.
